Here is some information about dogs that we have put together.

Dogs are the first animals tamed by humans. All dogs come from wolves, humans bred wolves to create the first dogs. Some breeds still look like wolves but most dogs hardly look like wolves. Dogs can sniff out hidden dangers such as TNT, they can guide people who are blind and they can find thieves aswell, they are great companions.

You can get dogs in different sizes. The Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound and the Saint Bernard are some of the biggest breeds. The worlds smallest dog breed is the Chihuahua.

Dogs with long fur need more frequent brushing, whilst dogs that have short fur rarely need brushing. Dogs that live and hangout in the countryside need to get groomed frequently as they may get lots of burs or other things in their fur which could cause matts.

Training dogs can get them to be more obedient towards you, you don’t have to spend too much time training them. Your dog must get to play and also have lots of exercise such as walks. Most dogs sleep happily in a dog bed or basket or a box lined with towels/ blankets.

Small dogs normally live longer than big dogs, toy poodles and pugs can live up to 15yrs whilst Great Danes and St. Bernard’s only live up to 8 or 9yrs. The record of the oldest dog is an Australian Cattle dog that lived for 29yrs and 5months.

When dogs are hot they pant, their tongues hang out of their mouth and the water evaporates off their tongue. This helps them to cool down as they can only sweat on the bits of their body without fur. e.g. their paws

The behavior of wild wolves is to dig holes to hide leftover food so that they could eat it later. As dogs have descended from wolves this is why they dig holes and sometimes bury items such as bones.

Some dogs follow trails of scent that are days old, they can hear things that humans can’t, like high pitched sounds.

A dog’s territory is normally where it lives. If a stranger that the dog doesn’t know comes into the dogs territory then the dog might bark to give a warning. Though barking can also be friendly.
